Deepest part of the cave river

Worshiped place by the ancient mayas because of its magnificience.

This cave is the third in a chain of three caverns, its the only one with based on private capital

It is located in the north of Alta Verapaz closer to Petén. The weather is hot and the place is not too populated which makes it more attractive.

Our adventure

We started from the hotel walking for about 150 feet in a mountain until we find the entrance "window" (entrance or exit of the cave) where you could see some offerings from the ancient mayas

We step in to see a really plain cave like about 15 feet tall and 15 feet wide. But when we walked a little more we enter a gigantic "window" which was impressive, it size was like 150 feet tall and 120 feet wide, there were bats on the top but you could barely see them they were too far and too small.

As we continue in the darkness we met with the second "window" which was avobe us and you could walk under it. In front of that window there is a connection with another small cave which carries a little river inside, it looks like the cave was made by the river; the little cave is like 10 feet wide and 15 feet tall, really small compared with the main cave.

We continue in the main cave until we get to the last window, a smaller one but full of life, it looks like the forest was trying to get in the cave.

In the return you can ask for returning inside the little cave with the river, which is an incredible experience. You walk against the natural flow of the river (it travels slow) for about 40 minutes until you get in the little river entrance to the cave.

Alta Verapaz, coban to candelaria

How to get there

To get there there is a paved road from Cobán of about 100 Km, to check if you are in the right route watch for the oleoduct on the side of the road after passing Chisec.

The parking slot is about 1 Km after the entrance to the place, but a bus can take you to the site.

When you are in the entrance you must walk for about 1 Km to get to the hotel where you can hire a guided tour.
